A comparison of three different inexpensive 58mm lens caps,
I purchased three different inexpensive 58mm caps from Amazon at the same time: (1) this cap, (2) Fotodiox Inner pinch Lens Cap with Cap Keeper, 58mm and (3) the Zeikos ZE-LC58 58mm Plastic Snap On Lens Cap (Black). All arrived relatively quickly.
This lens cap, although a little thicker than a flexible press-on, works well with my DSLR manufacturer’s 58mm filter-size lenses. It has a larger gripping surface than the original caps provided with those lenses, and so stays in place. Its tether is easy to connect to the triangular metal rings of my DSLR, and it’s relatively long so that it’s no problem connecting even with long lenses. It hangs significantly below the camera when removed from the lens. The clamping mechanism has more travel than my original lens caps. It works both directly on the lenses and on attached filters. Two minor issues (1) as the tether is made of string, it can occasionally catch under the clamping mechanism if its not free to hang, and (2) the clamping mechanism, at least on my copy, is a bit harder to squeeze than the cap on my DSLR manufacturer’s lens and some competitors, so it requires a bit more pressure to install or remove.
Bottom Line: If you need a tether pass on the tether-less Zeikos ZE-LC58 58mm Plastic Snap On Lens Cap. The Universal is a nice cap and I would consider buying it again. It has a sturdy grip and long enough tether to work with 58mm filter-size telephotos. However, the Fotodiox Inner pinch Lens Cap is possibly a better choice if you have larger fingers and may have trouble squeezing a tighter pinch mechanism. That cap’s pinch mechanism is somewhat easier to use. However, I was able to use both caps comfortably.
Just remember that a tethered cap stays with the camera not with the lens. Thus, it’s advisable to leave an extra 58mm cap in your camera bag for those times you remove a 58mm filter-size lens for one with a different filter-size thread.
